Kaiju of the Week: The Cloverfield Monster
The Cloverfield monster, or Clover, is a massive creature that can easily be considered a kaiju. This monstrous beast mainly uses its sheer size to cause destruction as it makes its way through New York City. Clover stands at 250-300 feet tall in its quadruped, or four-legged, form, however, can reach up to 350 feet tall in its bipedal stance, and weighs up to 5,806.2 metric tons. The feet on this beast are so big, they are the same size as a transit bus. Despite the massive size, it can also move very quickly because of its powerful legs. Although one may think it is too big to prey on humans, Clover has two external esophagi that allows it to feed on prey too small for itself. These esophagi were seen consuming multiple patrol horses at once. It also has softer membranes behind its eyes that many people have speculated about the use for. Some say that they are ear membranes, like those on frogs, or the membrane helps balance the pressure since Clover comes from the ocean, or some fans even say the membrane is how the kaiju breathes. The actual backstory to this kaiju is also very fascinating. Feeding on whales, although its diet shifted once it reached the land, it lived in the deep ocean, explaining the resemblance to an angler fish and its tough skin. The skin is a bleached grey color, due to not being exposed to the sun’s light and very well armored. According to Cloverpedia, “Shells from M1A2 tanks and M109A6 Paladins, AT-4 rockets and FGM-148 Javelin missile launchers, AGM-65 Mavericks and Mk-82 bombs and other high-powered ordnance failed to do anything other than aggravate and frighten the creature.” Clover also has parasites that drop from its skin, and those parasites (which are as large as dogs) have also begun hunting down humans.
